PROJECT AIMS:
to make a transformational change in the level of English among both university teaching staff and students at which they can fully participate on the international stagePROJECT OBJECTIVES: to create own sustainable English language teaching capacity in Ukrainian HEIs to take students to B2 or C1 CEFR levels, introduce new standards compatible within EHEA.
Stage 1: Benchmarking ESP and EMI teaching at Ukrainian universities and the National Mining University, in particular. This stage encompasses language proficiency testing with APTIS, classroom observations done by British consultants, their meetings with teachers and students etc. The results of the baseline studies were presented to the management of the participating universities, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Institute of Higher Education of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine and recommendations were given what is needed to reach goals of fluency in English amongst more staff and students at each of the universities.
Stage 2: EMI and EFL teachers training and follow-up disseminations of new ideas, knowledge and innovations in teaching English and delivering lectures in English at the local, regional and national levels. More than 50 NMU teachers took part and completed the following mini-courses:
ATE (Academic teaching excellence) for subject teachers with Level of English B2/C;
CiVELT (Certificate in Vocational English Language Teaching) for ESP teachers;
EAP(English for Academic Purposes) for teachers who work with master`s and post- graduate degree students;
ESP Modules Design for Heads of Foreign Language Departments.
Train the Trainer for EFL teachers who will provide professional ESP teacher trainings.
More than 300 NMU students completed British Council online course “Pathway” Levels B1 – B2 for free on the LearningEnglish platform.
Stage 3: Innovation implementations and evaluation. ESP Module Syllabus is designed and piloted at various universities. Special instruments: Questionnaires for teachers and students are designed to evaluate effectiveness of the ESP course and its modules. The results are discussed once a year at ESP Modules Design Symposia, where the Action Plan and strategies are discussed. EMI teachers develop and deliver their lectures in English, using new knowledge and innovations discovered at trainings and follow-up events. New Curricula are being developed and accredited.
