RAISING KNOWLEDGE AMONG STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ON TAILINGS SAFETY AND FIRST LEGISLATIVE REVIEW IN UKRAINE

Period

2016-2017

This project is [was] funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety by the Advisory Assistance Program for environmental protection in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia and other countries neighboring the European Union (AAP). It was supervised by the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA).

The project aims to familiarize the target audience with the European principles of the tailings management facilities (TMFs) safety such as the UNECE Safety Guidelines and Good Practices for TMFs, through an education course on the TMF Methodology including modules of intensive theoretical studies and visits to representative TMF sites for practical exercises.

Additionally, one of the main goals of this project is to improve the education course developed during 2013-2015 in the framework of the previous UBA project on tailings safety, which aimed to train experienced users of the TMF Methodology. The audience of the proposed pilot project will be students and young teachers of high schools. Thus, the creation of a holistic and universal training module for such audience by means of modification and refinement of existing educational materials on the TMF Methodology will be an integral part of project activities.

The objective of the project includes

- raising the knowledge in the TMF safety based on the TMF Methodology as an advanced approach to improving safety of hazardous mining sites among Ukrainian students in environmental and mining sciences and young university teachers dealing with education on environmental protection;

- improving the TMF safety level by addressing this issue on the legislative level in terms of how Ukraine fulfils its obligations under the Association Agreement.
